They were small glass spheres that magnified the words or letters on being placed over them. However, wearable eyeglasses are said to have been used first in Italy in around 1284. They were very simple with glass lenses mounted on frames made of bones, leather, wood or copper. They were either worn on one’s nose or held manually.
